The Giwa Local Government Legislative Council in Kaduna State has removed its Speaker, Hon. Yahuza Yusha’u, from office and elected Hon. Suleiman Ibrahim Galadima as his successor.
The development occurred during a plenary session following a motion moved by Hon. Salihu Junaidu, councillor representing Panhauya Ward.
Eight councillors reportedly signed the impeachment notice seeking the removal of the Speaker. They include Hon. Abdullahi Isma’il of Kidandan Ward; Hon. Suleiman Ahmad Mohammed of Shika Ward; Hon. Salihu Junaidu of Panhauya Ward; Hon. Mukhtar Ibrahim of Kadage Ward; Hon. Suleiman Ibrahim Galadima of Galadimawa Ward; Hon. Suleiman Ahmad of Gangara Ward; Hon. Yahuza Ibrahim Garba of Danmahawayi Ward; and Hon. Magani Adamu of Giwa Ward.
Following the removal of Yusha’u, the lawmakers immediately elected Galadima as the new Speaker of the council.
Hon. Magaji Adamu of Giwa Ward also emerged as the new Majority Leader.
The reason for the Speaker’s removal was not immediately disclosed as of the time of filing this report. Efforts to contact Yahuza Yusha’u for his reaction were unsuccessful.
Section 24 of the Kaduna State Local Government Law 2018 provides that the Speaker of a legislative council may be removed through a resolution supported by not less than a two-thirds majority of the council’s members.
The newly constituted leadership is expected to assume responsibility for the affairs of the legislative council and continue legislative activities in the interest of residents of Giwa Local Government Area.
Meanwhile, stakeholders are awaiting official recognition of the new Speaker by the Executive Chairman of Giwa Local Government Area.
